Whether you live in an apartment or house in Australia you can turn to solar power and receive government rebates for making this eco-friendly choice. There’s no question that we need to do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint. The financial rewards make renewable energy an even more attractive solution.

If you have a small scale household renewable energy system installed or a hot water system that meet the governments requirements you can reap the rewards through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) which can assist with the cost of purchasing.

This is a program that provides reimbursement and when you have a system installed that meets the eligibility requirements, Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are administered. These are electronic and can be sold or assigned, so they act as a type of currency. The majority of households opt to allocate their STCs to the installer to reduce the price they pay for the system.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

If your renewable energy system or hot water system meets the criteria then Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are awarded. The amount of certificates generated depends on the quantity of renewable energy produced by your system or the amount of power consumption is reduces. The climate zone where it has been installed also has a bearing.

Solar, wind and hydro systems are all eligible renewable energy systems to acquire STCs. Some hot water systems also can reduce the amount of power consumed and could be eligible for STCs. Solar and air source heat pump based hot water systems are usually eligible for STCs.

What Can You Do with Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

If you have solar panels or a hot water system which entitles you to gaining STCs you can decide what to do them. You could assign them to whoever installed the system and have it knocked off the price you pay to have the system supplied and fitted. You might decide to sell them through the open STCs market (the price will be driven by the market). Otherwise you can get $40 per STC via the STCs Clearing House.

The Clean Energy Regulator administers Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). For further information on how this scheme works visit the Australian Government’s site:

Other Incentives

The Australian Government along with State Governments recognise the importance of renewable energy and offer various incentives and information to get people involved. As well as the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) you may be eligible for rebates determined by your State Government. All of the states and territories pay an Electricity Feed-in Tariff for electricity generated through renewable energy systems that feed into the grid. However, the criterion varies along with differing pay rates. For more accurate information contact your State Government’s Energy Office to find out exactly what you are entitled to.

Our commitment to providing the best in energy efficient systems for your home means that we are happy to process the rebates for you to make sure you get what you are entitled to with your solar panels or hot water systems.
